The LivingInGK Story

Before Living In GK

When I arrived at GK in 2005, there was a big hole in the information world where GK was concerned.  A Google search yielded nothing, the Airman Family Readiness Center didn’t help much, and there were no Facebook pages for anything, actually, there was no Facebook or at least no one was on it yet.  What was worse was that there seemed to be an attitude of secrecy amongst Americans.  I’d be told about an amazing restaurant, but when I’d press for details, they wouldn’t tell me as if sharing their special place would make it less special, more touristy, less authentic.  It was like that with everything.  The quaint unknown village, the fabulous chateau in France, that amazing beach.  It was alluded to and bragged about, but never fully divulged.

Living In GK:  The Blog

In 2007, tired of the lack of information available, and needing a place to stash my business cards and notes, I began the Living In GK blog with a handful of posts determined to add as I traveled, tasted, and learned.

That month I wrote 51 posts and sent out an email to a handful of friends.

The response was amazing.

WOW-  I mean a huge WOW!  Thanks for passing along your site,  I’m going to pass it along some more.

Anyway… it began it with the simple idea that if I wrote my experiences and others sent in theirs, that we could have a really amazing resource for future people “living in GK.”

It’s changed dramatically since it’s first month in many ways.  The format is different.  There’s more to read.  New readers follow on Twitter and “like”on Facebook.

It’s still growing.  I still have many more things to share that I’ve experienced and not yet posted.  You have some things to share too, don’t you?

    Hi
I have been a follower since I arrived in 2010 and when i first found the site it had a beautiful format. I am wondering why it has changed to the way it is now.

    Thank you

Last year I moved all of my blogs from a Blogger format to WordPress (for a lot of reasons). The previous format, I’d designed through Artisteer, but that company wasn’t good about updates, so I often lost pieces of it as different internet functions would change. Anyway, I had hoped that this would be fun since I can add locations in the map. But I don’t love it either. What did you like about the previous look? I’m happy to try something different… I just don’t want to be like Facebook and change it too much too often. :) Love your feedback though.

This is such a sweet story. I think this blog was so inspiring. You are right about the secrecy. It still exists all these years later…. You were the start of something big though and you should be proud. I love your re-design!

Thank you, Amanda. It’s been a fun project over the years. Wish I had more time and the proximity to GK to put the same into it that I did before.
