“Come to this special Christmas Eve event: De Schark Caves, Maastricht
A Christmas Eve Ceremony will be held in the De Schark Caves, Maastricht, Dec. 24, 2010 to mark the anniversary of the Christmas Mass held there Dec. 24, 1944. The ceremony also marks the reopening of the caves for this special annual event since they were closed in 2005 for refurbishment.
Approximately 300 U.S. Soldiers gathered in the De Schark Cave, Dec. 24, 1944, to celebrate Christmas before deploying to Bastogne to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. Before they left the cave that night, they signed their names on the cave wall, leaving behind a solemn reminder of their faith, courage and sacrifice.
Overseas assignments present opportunities that cannot be duplicated back home in the United States and this event is truly distinctive. Driving time to the event from USAG Schinnen is approximately 45 minutes. The ceremony begins 7:30 p.m. and participants need to arrive no later than 6:45 p.m. to ride buses from the parking lot up to the cave site. Maps and more details will be provided when you pick up your tickets.
Tickets are available on a first-come, first serve basis at the USAG Schinnen Public Affairs Office.
