Preuvenemint, Maastricht (Food and Music)

You may have heard of the “Bite of” events in the states where restaurants show off a bit to show the best food in a region. Here, the Preuvenemint is just that – like a “Bite of Maastricht,” for four days some of the best restaurants in the city set up tents in the Vrithof selling, not carnival food, but absolutely delicious gourmet fare. Couple that with a continual flow of band after band from the grandstand and you have yourself an event.

What: 31 Food booths run by the best restaurants in town serving a wide variety of food. 4 large beer and soft drink stands. Wine sold at food stands. Free live music by a variety of bands during the entire event.
Where: Maastricht Vrijtof

Dates: 22-25 August, 2013

Cost: Entrance is free. There are three entrance points where you can buy tickets. One “preuvenelap” (food voucher) costs around 1.70E or you can get a booklet of 10 for 17E. Drinks from sodas to coffees to champagne and reserve wines cost 1-4 preuvenelappen. A taste of a gourmet food item will cost 2-10 preuvenelappen and, of course, that changes depending on the food item.

Charity? Yes. All proceeds from this event as in previous events do go towards children’s charities around the world.

Parking/Transportation: Parking in Maastricht can be difficult anyway, but being that this event is held at the Vrijtof, if you want to park there, I recommend getting there early and still having a backup plan. If you aren’t going to stay until 0200, this would be a perfect time to take the train from Sittard, Schinnen, or Herleen. Just make sure you know when the last train returns and pay attention to the time! (P.S. The ticket office at the Sittard train station closes at 1600)

Details: If you go online, you can peruse the “Preuvenegids,” a yellow covered pamphlet with details on all the participating restaurants and what they are serving. I won’t type it all here… you can look it up, but here’s just a few things I noticed…

Cheese assortments, quiche lorraine, croquettes, cheese topped salads…
Scampi in garlic butter, potato tarte, chocolate mousse, tuscan olives…
Korean bulgogi and kimchi…

Ice cream and gourmet coffees…
