Burg Satzvey, Germany; Christmas time

A recommendation to experience a medieval Christmas is what first took us to Burg Satzvey, Germany.  This is a moated castle in the Nordrhine-Westfalia area, which dates back to 1396 and is internationally known for their jousting and medieval festivals, as well as offering other special events throughout the year.  Since 1980, the residents of the family castle organize events to keep history alive, as an interesting teaching tool.  Special festivals during Christmas and Easter are a must see experience with crafts, dress, and food specialties from Medieval times.  Dress warmly for Christmas time, as the cold adds greatly to the atmosphere.  The Easter market offers the opportunity to see the castle grounds coming to life and the inside walls are filled with handmade products for sale and delicious food to sample.  Tours of the castle take place on Saturday and Sunday or holidays from 12-5.  A minimum of five adults is needed.  Take a look at www.burgsatzvey.de, to see a detailed listing of upcoming events.  If you train to Satzvey, the castle is a two minute walk away.  Cost for most festivals, 6 Euros adult, 4 Euros children 6-12
